Carlson is a different type of pitcher and athlete than his bigger and harder throwing brother Sam, who was a second round pick of the Mariners in 2017. The younger Carlson is more in the Mike Leake mold, with an athletic and high energy delivery and plus command of a fastball that works 90-92 regularly and can touch higher. He will throw both an outstanding changeup and a tight slider at any point in a count and has already earned a reputation as a fierce competitor on the mound.
