PETCO Park in beautiful San Diego, CA was once again the host venue for the All-American Baseball Classic. The 2010 installment proved to be another close contest with the East Team winning 5-3. They now hold a slim one game advantage in the overall series, at 4-3-1.
The East team used an offensive explosion in the third inning to gain a quick lead. A pair of triples by Francisco Lindor and Javier Baez led to the first run of the inning and a long two run homer by Tyler Marlette culminated the scoring. Sean Trent added a seventh inning double that produced the final two runs of the game for the East. That was all the scoring necessary, as a myriad of pitchers held the West squad to seven hits and only one after the fifth inning.
Leading the West Team offensively, Philip Evans scored a run and reached base four times on a pair of singles and a couple of walks. Top pitching performances included Henry Owens, who struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth; Archie Davis, who pitched a strong eighth inning and Archie Bradley, who struck out four.
The East Team brought home a number of key awards. Tyler Marlette was named the games MVP, while Francisco Lindor took home the Home Run Derby title on the strength of four long final round blasts.
During the Annual Award Banquet, Daniel Norris grabbed the National Player and Pitcher of the Year Awards, while Austin Hedges took home the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for outstanding season-long defensive play.
