2002 PG Evaluation/Instructional Camp Indianapolis
May is a very young shortstop from Missouri that showed well for us in Indianapolis. He is only in 8th grade and already has good actions to build on. He is still fairly small, but has 5 years until he graduates from High School. He is listed as a primary shortstop and we think he will be just that. For his age and size he can play the game. Defensively he is aggressive and can make all the plays. His range is limited only by his physical limitations and we liked the footwork and hands that he showed us the first day. He has a good arm action and throws from a low 3/4 arm slot that should raise a bit in the future. He’s smooth on the double play ball and 70 mph already across the diamond. There is so much room for additional improvement on his tools, it makes his ceiling very high. He not only understood the instruction, he made the adjustments in stride as they became a new part of his defensive arsenal. His backhand was the most improved part of his fielding and we look forward to following him as a prospect for the next few years. With the bat, he showed us a good swing even though he lacked the bat-speed and power of much older, stronger players right now. He has a stable posture, swings under control, showed patience at the plate and would hit both inside and outside pitches where they were pitched. He projects in most areas of hitting and fielding well. The way he swings now and the way he plays the rest of his game suggest that there are big things to come from this young player.
